This page will tell you a bit about what problem we’re solving, why our solution is unique, and what technologies we use. Then you’ll get to meet some of our team and learn how you can join us.

Let’s start with the problem we’re solving…

Current Healthcare Experience

Let’s be frank.

The healthcare experience we know was designed before the internet and before every consumer had the power of a massive supercomputer in the palm of their hand.

Patients have only recently been given access to their own health data with Consumer Right of Access laws within the Cures Act of 2020.  Until now, health plans and health systems and medical providers have kept a close guard on the data as a competitive asset.

When we get health data back, it’s mostly in the form of confusing Explanation of Benefits (EOB) we receive from our insurance company.  Most consumers do not understand these EOBs and many pay their provider before the claims are adjudicated which then makes it hard to get any necessary refund.

Even choosing the right insurance plan from those offered by our employer is a tough decision with high dollar ramifications.

Knowing where we can get the best price on medications is not consumer friendly.  And providers always want us to bring in a bag of our medications (they get paid to help us keep track).

And the world of connected health devices continues to expand exponentially. “I have a lot of data but does any of it affect my health?”

Over the course of a lifetime, we’re leaving behind a trail of medical records in various physician portals and insurance portals.  All of these have separate log-ins and passwords – all of our information is left behind in forgotten, inaccessible silos.  Of course, those with families — we’re talking about not just our records but our spouse’s, our kids’ and our parents’ records too.

The bottom line is that to get your healthcare data you’d have to go to 20+ places that all work differently and have different usernames and passwords. And you’d have to keep going since your healthcare data is always changing.

As if collecting this data is not hard enough, we are then bombarded with all the possible things we could be doing to improve our health:

“Lose weight! Eat healthy! Sleep more! Exercise more! Get flu vaccine! Get Covid vaccine! Get a Covid test! Get a physical exam! Get cholesterol check! and more!”

Given our insanely busy lives, which ones should we try to do and what impact can we expect in the coming years if we do that?

There are lots of companies willing to help: Weight Watchers, Livongo, Jenny Craig and more but they have no access to my healthcare record so how can they really craft a personalized plan for me and which of these programs works best for someone like me?

Finally, how can I be in control of my healthcare data? I want to know who has access to what parts of my healthcare record.  I want to choose to allow access or stop it when I want. I can do it for my Facebook posts but I can’t do it for my health information!

Most importantly, I want all of my data to move with me when I change jobs, change doctors or change insurers.  I want my new doctor to have my full longitudinal health record so she can help me make the best decisions for my health and that of my family.

Well this is exactly why we built b.well!

What’s b.well?

b.well is your digital assistant for healthcare on the phone

It brings together all of your data from doctors, hospitals, insurers, employers, pharmacies and personal devices and puts you in control of your healthcare data – you can share it with family members and doctors, and stop sharing when you want.

Using data science, it gives you personalized insights and recommendations, helps you find and schedule appropriate care when you need it, helps you save on out-of-pocket expenses and enables you to make the best decisions for you and your family’s health.

And it does not lock you into a doctor, a health system, an insurance company, an employer or even a phone vendor. You have the freedom to change any of these and your data will always be with you.

A Modern and Open Health Platform For Consumers

To accomplish our mission, we had to build the first health platform designed for consumers. There are, of course, plenty of platforms designed for providers, insurers, employers and pharmacies that have “add-ons” to give tidbits of data to consumers.

Helix, the b.well platform, is built for consumers of healthcare using modern standards like FHIR, CQL, and GraphQL.

Helix leverages state of the art technologies like Apache Spark, AWS, Python, Elasticsearch, Node.js, Docker, and Kubernetes to process millions of records every day.

We’ve built our platform from the ground up for data science (both traditional machine learning and deep learning) so our data science is not trapped in Jupyter notebooks but runs every day on your healthcare record.

Helix is an open platform allowing anyone to read and write the data in real-time via FHIR APIs (as long as you’ve allowed them access to your patient record).

We are active contributors to the open source ecosystem to help the whole healthcare industry:

  1. Our icanbwell/fhir-server supports GraphQL access to FHIR data and a more flexible security model.
  2. Our framework for Apache Spark enables processing FHIR in parallel for millions of records (https://github.com/icanbwell/SparkPipelineFramework and icanbwell/SparkAutoMapper.FHIR).

b.well Mission and Customers

Leading the Industry

b.well Connected Health is leading the industry efforts to design and execute digital transformation for consumer-patients, providers, payors and retail pharmacy clinics. The patient wants a consumer-like experience with healthcare; healthcare providers want to improve their offering and move to a more engaged patient to drive preventive care in a personalized way.

Single Place for All Health and Wellness Tools

b.well is the platform to be the consumer SSO(Single Sign On) of all health and wellness tools, so that all are in one place, and the data is integrated and analyzed for clinicians to then create a personalized health journey for each patient. Greater engagement enables preventive care to improve care outcomes and more affordable care.

Top Ten in AWS Healthcare Accelerator

b.well was recently chosen by AWS to be one of ten companies out of over 400 applicants, to be part of their healthcare acceleration initiative. Our clients include leading multi-hospital health systems, health plans, retail pharmacy/clinics and self-funded employers.

Personalized Recommendations and Insights

b.well is attractive and unique to stakeholders because by using data science, b.well gives you (the consumer-patient) personalized insights and recommendations, helps find and schedule appropriate care when you need it, helps save on out-of-pocket expenses and enables you to make the best decisions for you and your family’s health.

Driving Healthcare Standards

b.well is also actively involved with federal regulatory and policy committees setting FHIR data standards for the next phase of digital transformation.
